A Critical Conversation: “Building Municipal Infrastructure”
Held on February 25th 2010 at Carleton University, Ottawa

This one day event day event discussed municipal infrastructure and, specifically, the efficacy of federal transfers (e.g. the Gas Tax Fund and the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund) for the development of local infrastructure – both physical and social. Fundamental transformations are required in all sectors of society, including changes to our social, economic and governance structures if Canada’s growing infrastructure challenges are to be met. Canadian municipalities and communities are on the front-line in trying to maintain and renew urban infrastructure but rely heavily on the federal and provincial governments for funding through a plethora of transfers and programs.

This event disseminated the findings of a three-year research project examining Infrastructure Canada’s Gas Tax Fund and engaged expert panels of academics, public servants, and practitioners in broader questions related to local government finance and both physical and social infrastructure development and renewal. The event was attended by over 50 people representing Federal, Provincial, Municipal Governments, Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector, Academics and Industry.
